What is EOTAS?

EOTAS (Education Other Than at School) refers to situations where a child cannot attend a mainstream or special school in the typical way or when a school setting is unable to meet their needs effectively. In such cases, their education is provided through alternative means, which may include 1-to-1 tuition at home or online.

The Local Authority (LA) has a statutory responsibility to ensure that every child receives an education, regardless of their circumstances. When no suitable school placement is available, the LA can award and fund an EOTAS package to meet the child’s educational needs.​ Being educated outside the school environment can be a temporary arrangement, such as while a pupil awaits a new school placement. Alternatively, it can become a long-term solution if no suitable placement can be found.

Parents who believe that an EOTAS package would benefit their child can formally request one from their Local Authority. This ensures that their child continues to receive the support and education they need, even outside a traditional school setting.
